Motivation of Employees in the Public and Private Sector

â€Å"Motivation is an individuals degree of willingness to exert and maintain an effort towards organizational goals Dieleman, M. et al. (2003). It is true that everyone work for a good pay package and are motivated upon by same so as to meet their basic needs and those of their dependents. However, decision makers often rely on financial incentive as a means of motivation which in itself is fine thanks to the New Public Management scheme of pay-for-performance. Nevertheless, it’s as well important to note that while financial incentives are used to enhance higher productivity and serve as an important determinants for worker motivation, they alone however cannot solve public sector employees motivation problems since over reliance on financial incentives in the public sector could lead to negative results as people will turn to do everything to get financial rewards leaving out the expertise aspect of their job, praise appreciation from community where they served Franco, L.M et al. Motivational processes in the public service operate at the level of an individual, and composed of two parallel components: the extent to which workers adopt organizational goals of - will do and the extent to which workers effectively mobilize their personal resources to achieve joint goals - can do [....] Franco, L.M et al.
